This superb faux-bamboo giltwood firescreen has been exquisitely crafted with a Japanese- inspired tapestry panel at its centre, which features a colourful design of peacocks assembling under an architectural pagoda, surrounded by lush tropical vegetation. Standing on four flared feet for extra stability, the screen is rectangular in shape, with a practical lifting handle at the top for ease of movement. The gleaming gilt finish adds a definite touch of romance and glamour to this once utilitarian household object, which dates from the Napoleon III period (second half of 19th century).
