Description :

This large 18th century verdure tapestry is a striking example of the artistry and storytelling found in European weaving. Woven in wool and silk, it depicts a pastoral landscape filled with tall leafy trees, soft rolling hills, and a stately stone manor in the background. The scene is brought to life by the figures of three shepherds rushing to defend their flock from danger. At the center of the action, a wolf attempts to flee with a lamb in its jaws, while in an exceptionally rare and heroic detail, a sheep bites the predator’s leg in defense of the young animal. This dramatic moment, woven into an otherwise peaceful countryside setting, adds both narrative depth and visual tension.

The harmonious palette of vegetal blues, greens, and ochres has softened over time, giving the tapestry its authentic patina. Framed by a wide decorative border with ribbon and foliate motifs, it is lined and shows expected wear, fading, and minor losses consistent with its age. A remarkable piece, notable both for its decorative impact and the rarity of its vivid rural drama.
