A luxurious 18th-century Aubusson tapestry, depicting a dog barking at fowl on a river, in a typically rural and architectural-themed landscape. Hand-woven in wool, in predominantly green and cream hues with a border on all sides, this antique wall hanging is an excellent example of an Aubusson tapestry, steeped in themes of a pastoral nature, and brimming with dense foliage, flora, fauna and whimsical architecture.
The tapestry does show some small signs of wear and repair.
The top border wil need to be stitched back on its length.
The small French town of Aubusson, on the River Creuse, is famed for its tradition of weaving elegantly elaborate tapestries. They often depicted romantic pastoral, historic or architectural scenes and were particularly noted for their compositions of garlands and bouquets, becoming famous and sought after throughout Europe.
