This antique French terracotta cruche dates from the 19th century, and would have once been used to store and transport olive or walnut oil, or to keep drinking water fresh and cool. Beautifully shaped, with two side handles and a wide mouth, it has been half glazed in a warm, honey-coloured glaze with green drip detailing, leaving the lower half bare. This unglazed half would sometimes have been buried in earth, to help keeps its contents cool without the glaze peeling off. Scuffed and chipped in places, this jar was once a utilitarian kitchen item in a French country home, and would have been handmade by a local potter. Each one is unique and full of character, and would be a magnificent decorative feature with an entrancing backstory.
