Description :
This rare late 19th century French wardrobe trunk, circa 1885–1900, is a superb example of refined travel craftsmanship from the Belle Époque. Designed for extended journeys, it combines elegant proportions with highly practical interior fittings, reflecting the standards of luxury travel at the end of the 19th century.
The exterior is covered in its original textured canvas, reinforced with dark wooden slats, thick leather corner protectors, and riveted brass hardware, all displaying a rich, authentic patina consistent with age and use. The gently domed lid, a characteristic feature of late 19th century trunks, was designed to improve durability and protect contents during travel.
Inside, the trunk reveals a beautifully preserved and thoughtfully arranged interior. One side features a vertical series of fabric-lined drawers, each fitted with original stitched leather pulls, while the opposite side is configured as a hanging wardrobe with a wooden rail and a set of original shaped wooden hangers. The interior lining, decorated with a repeating printed motif, is typical of high-quality French trunks produced during this period.
Original travel labels, including one referencing Vichy, add historical depth and evoke the era’s fashionable spa and leisure destinations. Both functional and highly decorative, this wardrobe trunk makes a striking statement in a bedroom, dressing room, or refined interior, embodying the elegance of late 19th century French travel.
