A superb early 19th century Empire period wash basin (with saucer) and tall pitcher, beautifully crafted from Old Paris Porcelain and featuring a very striking hand-painted polychrome design reminiscent of ancient Egypt. Geometric bands of dark wine-red spots encircle the jug and basin above an intricate repeating pattern of gilt spirals and leaves separated by cobalt-blue flowers. The upper section and handle of the jug, and the rim of the basin, are fully gilded, although there is some wear to this due to age and usage. The jug is beautifully shaped, with a tall, arching handle and wide pouring rim, while the basin is a good depth - perfect for performing the morning ablutions before the days of ensuite bathrooms and hot and cold running water. This is a very striking set, and would be the perfect vintage addition to a stylish bedroom or bathroom.
